Raw Edge Circle Quilt

I love to do throw sized quilts.  Only once have I delved into the land of larger quilts and that was for my bed on my trailer.  If any of you out there have a trailer, you know that the quilt (I'm not even sure it deserves that name) that comes with the trailer would not keep you warm in a 70 degree day.  I will show you the quilt that I replaced it with later, it isn't the prettiest quilt I made, but it is the warmest...  This quilt is something that I made to keep my sanity.  There is something about quilting that just puts me in a "nothing" box.  I decided to make a baby quilt that I knew that I could finish in a day a two to keep me sane.

The top of this quilt was made almost entirely out of scraps that I had left over from various quilts that I had made.  I love how it brings out the "spring fever" in me.  I found this great tutorial here.  I am addicted to this blog.  I cut her quilt down to a 29" x 29" size to make a baby sized quilt.

I quilted it by using my freehand quilting foot to to quilt the circles and I freehanded the rest of the interior.  I did draw the whole thing out with chalk and quilted over it which I wouldn't recommend because it doesn't look like the chalk washed out entirely.  You live and learn right.  Even though it is intimidating, you can freehand without drawing the entire thing out.  As long as you do it in sections, you shouldn't cross over your stitches.

After I had finished the interior of my quilt, I had the problem of find a border for my quilt.  I went to Fabric Depot in Portland which is a massive store and I wandered the store for about 2 hours before I settled on a blue fabric just to make me feel like it wasn't a wasted trip.  I wasn't happy with it, this quilt was turning out to look like a girly quilt and the fabric that I found wasn't going to satisfy me.  I made a trip to See Sissy Sew and I found this watermelon fabric that seemed to match perfectly with this quilt.

I used this cute strawberry print for the backing.  I thought that it added the "whimsy" finish that it needed.  I hope you like it, I sure do!!!

Anybody can do this... Even you!!!

  6. Beautiful! I am so impressed! How in the world do you sew in spirals like that? (I am by no means a sewer! I can use my sewing machine to make burp cloths or an easy apron and thats about it!!)
